Johnny Yelverton, a former teacher at Maize Career Academy and a former police officer, pleaded guilty in December 2018 to two counts of unlawful sexual relations with a 17-year-old student at the academy. In January 2019 he was sentenced to three years of probation with an underlying 32-month prison term and ordered to register as a sex offender.
